The confirmation notice
The IRS posts it once to confirm your number. Banks and processors ask to see it. It sits in your documents from the day it arrives.
Every bank, payment processor and marketplace asks for your EIN first. The IRS online form is closed to founders without an SSN. We file Form SS-4 by the other route the day your company exists, and chase it until the number arrives.
Checked by the BaseAcross team.
Without an SSN the application goes on paper, and the IRS works that queue by hand. It says nothing about you.
The IRS online application needs the responsible party's SSN or ITIN. A founder abroad has neither. So the application goes on paper, on Form SS-4, by fax or by the IRS's telephone line for international applicants, and the IRS works that queue by hand. That is the whole reason for the delay. It is not a mark against you or your company.
We prepare the SS-4 from your order. The responsible party's number is marked Foreign, and the entity is described the way the IRS expects. We file it the day the state approves the company, then we chase. The IRS says that under its Fax-TIN program an EIN by fax generally comes within 4 business days. For a company owned from abroad, our estimate is 6 to 8 weeks. With the expedited EIN we use the direct route and chase daily, and our estimate is 2 to 3 weeks.

One notice, the CP 575, posted once. It goes into your documents the day it arrives.
The IRS confirms your number on a notice called the CP 575, which it posts once. Banks and processors ask to see it, so we keep it in your documents. If it is ever lost, the IRS issues a replacement called the 147C letter, and we request it for you.
Once you have the number, you can apply to a bank, to the payment processors and to marketplace tax interviews the same day. The bank account page says which banks open for whom. The Stripe and PayPal page says what each one asks for.

If the CP 575 is ever lost, the IRS issues this on request, and banks accept it the same way. We request it for you for $49.

No. The SS-4's mailing address can be outside the United States, and its question on where the business is located is answered with where you run it from, which for a founder abroad is where you are. Don't use the registered agent's address there: banks compare it with your other documents.
Our estimate is six to eight weeks on the ordinary route, from the day we file, which is the day the state approves your company. With the expedited EIN, our estimate is two to three weeks. The IRS queue moves at its own pace, so both are estimates, not promises.
No. You don't need an ITIN to get an EIN. We file the SS-4 with the responsible party's number marked Foreign. Some founders apply for an ITIN later for their personal US tax filings. That's a separate matter.

No. The responsible party on the SS-4 must be the person who controls the company. Using someone else's number tells the IRS something untrue. The expedited EIN is the honest way to shorten the wait.
It takes about four minutes. You see the whole order, state fee included, before anything is charged.
