What the video says

0:00Can you own a US LLC while living in Bahrain?

It's evening in Manama, and Fatima is looking at her checkout page. She's built a small software product, and her customers are abroad. They want to pay by card. The surprise here is the tax. Bahrain has no income tax outside oil and gas, so the American side is most of the work. We're BaseAcross. We set up US companies for founders outside America, so we'll be straight with you.

You can form one while living in Bahrain, with no social security number and no trip to the US.

0:30Do you need a US company for Stripe in Bahrain?

So, does Fatima need a US company at all? Start there, because it adds US filings. Ask your adviser, too, whether a Bahraini company would serve you better. A US company earns its place when there's a reason. Some US buyers and platforms want a US company to contract with, and US investors usually want a Delaware corporation. Fatima's reason is simpler. The big card processor doesn't take Bahraini businesses.

A US company with a US bank account can apply to it. It reviews her, and it can decline.

1:02Does Bahrain tax your US company's profit?

At home, the rules are short. Outside oil and gas, Bahrain has no general corporate income tax. It has no personal income tax either, so it doesn't define who's resident for one, and income not paid in Bahrain isn't taxed here. There is a minimum top-up tax, but it reaches only multinational groups with very large global revenue. It doesn't apply to local businesses with no operations abroad.

The one tax that can reach Fatima's company is VAT, if it sells to customers in Bahrain. We'll come back to that.

1:34Wyoming LLC or Delaware C-Corp, and an EIN without an SSN

Forming the company is the straightforward part. A Wyoming LLC suits a business you run yourself, like Fatima's. A Delaware C-Corp suits raising from US investors, though it pays US corporate tax. It needs a registered agent, an address in that state for legal papers, not where you work. Then the EIN, the company's US tax number. Without a social security number or an ITIN, the application goes on a separate IRS form instead of the online tool. You'll pay in US dollars, so check your card's exchange rate and fees.

And it all happens online and in writing, so you never need to be awake in American hours.

2:13Which US bank accounts work from Bahrain?

Now the bank, and here Bahrain is unusual. A US fintech bank takes applications from founders who live in Bahrain, because Bahrain isn't on its list of countries it doesn't serve. You can apply, and it decides each application. A multi-currency account is different. It gives no US account details to a company run from Bahrain, because here only personal accounts can hold money. Another US bank doesn't bar Bahrain, but it asks every owner for a physical US address.

Each provider decides for itself. So Fatima applies to the US fintech bank first.

2:49Does VAT apply? A worked example from Manama

So how does Bahrain see the money? Here's the guide's own illustration. Say Fatima's Wyoming LLC makes thirty thousand dinars of profit, from work she does in Manama for clients abroad. With no general corporate tax and no personal income tax, neither the company nor Fatima pays Bahraini income tax on it. If the company starts selling to customers in Bahrain, VAT can apply from its first taxable supply here. That's an illustration, not a quote.

VAT, and any registration you need here, are for your adviser. So keep a record of where your customers are.

3:24Do you pay US tax, and is there a US–Bahrain treaty?

Then the American side. Pay for work Fatima does in Bahrain generally isn't US income, so an LLC with no US office or staff often owes no US income tax on it. There's no tax treaty between the US and Bahrain. If US dividends, interest or royalties are paid to you, they're withheld at thirty percent, unless a US exemption applies. Her single-owner LLC still files a report with the IRS when it has reportable dealings with her. Money she puts in or takes out can count, even in a year without sales, and missing it is expensive.

It's usually due in the spring, with a form to ask for more time before then.

4:02What to do first, in order

Put together, the order runs like this. Start with your adviser, about VAT, any registration here, and whether a Bahraini company would suit you better. Then form the company and get the EIN, and apply for a bank account before the card processor. Put the IRS report and any VAT filings on one calendar. The full guide, with every source and a checklist for your adviser in English and Arabic, is linked below. And at home?

There's no income tax return to file, so most of Fatima's calendar is American.
