Can You Start a US LLC from Tanzania? Bank of Tanzania Rules (2026)
Can you start a US company from Tanzania? The harder part is at home. Under the Bank of Tanzania's 2022 regulations, a resident may fund direct investment inside the EAC and SADC through a bank, but the US is outside that region, so sending money to a US company needs the Bank's approval. 4:41 long, published .

What the video says
0:00Can a Tanzanian resident own a US LLC?
It's late afternoon in Dar es Salaam, and Neema has just sent a quote to a client in America. He wants to pay by card, and the big card processor doesn't take Tanzanian businesses. So she reads up on US companies. On the American side, she can have one. No social security number, and no trip to the US. We're BaseAcross. We set up US companies for founders outside America, so we'll be straight with you. The harder part is at home.
America is outside the region, so sending money to her own company needs the Bank of Tanzania's approval.
0:34Do you need a US company for Stripe in Tanzania?
So, does she need one? That depends on the reason. Card payments are a common one here. A US company with an EIN and a US bank account can apply to the card processor, which reviews the business and the person behind it, and can decline. US investors are another reason, and they usually want a Delaware C-Corp. A Tanzanian company expanding to America can own a US subsidiary, with the Bank's approval.
And if you sell services to clients abroad, take advice first. Ask whether a Tanzanian company would serve you better.
1:07Do you need the Bank of Tanzania's approval?
Here's Tanzania's central rule, from the Bank of Tanzania's own regulations of 2022. A resident may fund direct investment inside the EAC and SADC through a bank, with the company's documents. America is outside that region, so the same transfer to a US company needs the Bank's approval. Do you need it? To send money to it, yes. There's a second rule. A resident may not open or keep an account outside Tanzania unless the Governor expressly permits it.
Whether that covers the company's own US account, or only accounts in your name, is a question for your adviser.
1:44Wyoming LLC or Delaware C-Corp, and an EIN without an SSN
Once the Tanzanian side is clear, the American part is simpler. A Wyoming LLC suits an owner-run business that needs card payments or sells abroad. A Delaware C-Corp suits raising from US investors. The company needs a registered agent, an address in that state for legal papers, not where you work. Then the EIN, the company's US tax number. Without a social security number or an ITIN, the application goes on a separate IRS form instead of the online tool.
Prices are in US dollars, so ask your bank whether it can make the payment, and check its rate and fees.
2:20Which US bank accounts work from Tanzania?
Then the bank, where the news is better. Founders living in Tanzania can apply to a US fintech bank. Its list of countries it doesn't serve goes by where you live, Tanzania isn't on it, and it decides each application. A multi-currency account gives no dollar account details to founders living here, because Tanzania isn't among the places it lets people hold money.
Another bank doesn't bar Tanzania, but it asks every owner for a physical US address. Each provider decides for itself.
2:52How do you fund the company, and can Tanzania tax it?
Here's the first money moving, in the guide's own illustration. Neema plans to send three thousand dollars from her account in Dar es Salaam to her new Wyoming LLC, as its capital. That needs the Bank of Tanzania's approval. Once it's approved, her bank sends it with the company's documents, such as the EIN letter. And if she controls the company from Dar es Salaam, even by email, it can also be Tanzanian-resident for tax, and pay tax here on its worldwide income.
That's an illustration, not legal advice. Your bank confirms which documents it needs.
3:27Do you pay US tax, and is there a US–Tanzania treaty?
As for you, you're resident if you have a permanent home here and spend time here in the year, or you're here enough days. Residents are taxed on worldwide income. How the company's payments to you are taxed is for your adviser. There's no tax treaty between America and Tanzania, so US dividends, interest and royalties paid to you are withheld at thirty percent, unless a US exemption applies. Work you do in Tanzania generally isn't US income, so a US company with no US office or staff often owes no US income tax on it.
A single-owner LLC still files a report with the IRS when it has reportable transactions with you.
4:06What to do first, in order
Put together, the order runs like this. Start with your bank and your tax adviser: how the Bank of Tanzania will approve the funding, and where the company will be controlled from. Then form the company, get the EIN, and apply to the bank. Keep the Bank's approval and a record of all money between Tanzania and the company, and put the IRS report and your Tanzanian return on one calendar. And Neema? She called her bank before she ordered anything.
