Term 23 of 105 in the glossary, filed under C.IRS: instructions for Form SS-4

01 · Explained

CP 575 letter, for a founder abroad.

The IRS generates the CP 575 when it assigns an EIN. It shows the company's name and address, the EIN, and the returns the IRS expects the company to file. It's posted once, to the mailing address on Form SS-4, and the IRS doesn't reissue it.

Banks, payment processors and marketplaces accept it as proof of the EIN, which is why it's the first document they ask for. Scan it the day it arrives and keep the original. If it's lost, the replacement is a 147C letter, on request. A copy goes in your documents.

02 · Questions

What founders ask next.

Can I get my CP 575 again?
No. The IRS posts it once and doesn't reissue it. Ask for a 147C letter instead, which banks accept almost everywhere the CP 575 is.
Is the faxed SS-4 with the EIN on it the same as a CP 575?
No, though it proves the number too and some banks accept it while the CP 575 is in the post. The CP 575 and 147C guide compares the three.
Where is the CP 575 sent?
To the mailing address on Form SS-4. Posted abroad it can take weeks, which is why many founders give a US mailing address, such as their agent's, on the application.
