01 · Explained

Forms 2848 and 8821, for a founder abroad.

Form 2848 is a power of attorney: it lets an attorney, accountant or enrolled agent represent the company or you before the IRS. Form 8821 is narrower: it authorises anyone named to receive and inspect tax information, without representing you.

Founders abroad usually meet them when someone else has to call the IRS, for example to ask for a 147C letter: the caller must be the responsible party or someone authorised on one of these forms.
