Check a name.
Nothing is reserved or ordered here. Change the state or the company type and the check updates.
How does a state decide a name is taken?
Four rules cover most refused names in both states.
The same words are the same name. A different ending, punctuation or spacing doesn't make a name new. Acme LLC and Acme, L.L.C. are the same name. Acme Labs LLC is a different one.
Active and reserved names both count. A name someone has reserved is off the table until the reservation runs out, even though no company uses it yet.
Some words need a regulator's approval. Words like bank, insurance and university, licensed professions, and anything that sounds like a government body. Delaware's LLC law bars "bank" unless the company is a bank or the word clearly isn't about banking.
The state decides when your filing arrives. Neither state gives a binding answer in advance. A name that's free today can be filed by someone else tomorrow.
Questions about checking a name.
If yours is not here, email us at hello@baseacross.com before you order.
Both states keep automated searches out. Wyoming's search shows a check that a person is there, and Delaware's has a CAPTCHA and says automated tools can get access suspended. So the checker runs the naming rules for you, opens the state's search with the right words copied, and a person on our team searches it when you ask.
We email you the answer within an hour of asking. A person searches the state's register by hand, so it isn't instant.
No. We tell you what the state's register showed on the day we searched it. The state makes the final decision when it reviews your filing, and someone else can file the same name before then.
We use it to send you the answer to this check, and nothing else. You won't be added to a mailing list.
The words of the name without the ending, like Acme Labs rather than Acme Labs LLC. Both states treat a name with a different ending or punctuation as the same name, so searching the words shows you the near-matches that matter.
No. A US state checks only its own register. Your US company can share the name, with a US ending such as LLC.
Not on its own. Forming the company puts the name on one state's register. A federal trademark from the USPTO is what protects a brand, so search its database too before you print anything.
Found your name? We do the filing.
It takes about four minutes. You see the whole order, state fee included, before anything is charged.
