Term 66 of 105 in the glossary, filed under M.Wise: business pricing (US)

01 · Explained

Mid-market rate, for a founder abroad.

The mid-market rate is the rate you see on a currency search: halfway between what banks pay for a currency and what they sell it for. Most banks convert at a worse rate and call the difference no fee, so the real cost of moving money home is hidden in the rate.

Wise converts at the mid-market rate and shows its fee separately, from 0.23% for US business accounts, which is why founders abroad often take money home through Wise. Mercury charges 1% to convert on a non-dollar wire.

Usually Wise, or sending dollars to a local account that converts cheaply, rather than a bank wire in your own currency.
